A common question we get asked is the difference in the various substrates used for signs. Below is a list of some of the more common materials used and a brief product description.

Coroplast™
The Coroplast™ name is known throughout the Sign Industry for a consistent high quality printable surface. The only down side is that the corrugation shows through the graphic at close distance. Corrugated plastic is a great economical solution for indoor or outdoor signage and is our most used substrate. Typically we use 1/8″ to 1/4″ thick coroplast.

Foamcore
A strong, lightweight and easily cut material. It consists of three layers — an inner layer of polystyrene clad with outer facing of either a white claycoated paper. The foam is fairly easily crushed and edges bent, so you must be careful with storage and transporting. Typically we use .15″ to .50″ thick Formcore.

GatorFoam®
A durable lightweight board, it consists of a core of polystyrene foam bonded on both sides with wood fibers impregnated with resin. This provides durability and rigidity as well as moisture resistance.The foam used on this product holds up much better then Foamcore in storage and transporting. Typically we use .15″ to .50″ thick Gatorfoam

Acrylic

Commonly referred to as plexiglass. Great for indoor use and has a polished finished and smooth texture. It is manufactured in several thicknesses and may be finished with beveled edges, polished or graphics may be applied to the second surface. Typically we use 1/8″ to 1/2″ acrylic.

Alumalite

A durable product composed of white aluminum blank sheets on both sides with corrugated plastic in between. This material is perfect for long-term outdoor applications.

Aluminum

This lightweight material is great for indoor or outdoor applications. The major benefit is its duration. Aluminum can be used anywhere and is recommended in applications where the sign must last five years or more. Aluminum can be purchased in several colors or textured metals.

Assuming you haven’t become familiarized with QR codes yet, picture this: An immediate and direct way of connecting with a particular product, service or web location through a quick, two-dimensional barcode-like scan using your personal smart-phone, iPad or Tablet computer. In the most simplistic terms, that’s the benefit of QR codes. There is obviously a more detailed explanation of how these codes can be used in the sign and graphics industry.

WHAT IS THIS THING?

The square QR code isn’t as complex as it looks. It acts as a link between one party’s intended information and the party on the viewing end. The black matrix pattern of a QR code stores information such as web addresses that can be tied into print ads, signage displays and more. Audiences exposed to the code are encouraged to scan the patterned square with a properly equipped smart phone in order to obtain and quickly access the stored information.

Some niches have caught on faster than others. That’s not to say that others won’t follow in using QR codes readily on signage and displays.
